Last season have been an unforgettable one with some amazing matches which saw the Manchester United winning away at PSG despite losing the first/leg and with key players missing, overall was an incredible night. But no one was able to predict the shock of Liverpool overturning a 3-0 deficit against Barcelona with a 4-0 win at Anfield. Then there was another incredible Tottenham against Ajax in the semi-final.

England Premier League supplied both finalists last season with Liverpool beating Tottenham to become the European champions for the sixth time in their history. We are all curious if these EPL teams can dominate again this season.

Manchester City and Liverpool both will try to dominate and conquer Europe, but we see also PSG, Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich that are all again proving to be major contenders again this season. The group stages have been completed and the draw for the last sixteen made. The road to Instabul for the final on the 30th May 2020 is going to be action-packed.

The Road to Istanbul 2020 has been moved to Lisbon

It all began on 25th June 2019 the Champions League 2019/20 with a preliminary round tournaments with teams battling for one precious place in the first qualifying round. But, obviously, the race to qualify for the Champions League was determined by the league positions in countries around Europe in the previous season.

Some countries such as England, Spain and Italy see the top four in their league qualify. Other smaller nations just have their league champions qualify to take part.

There were some big name casualties this season, all ending up in the Europa League. Porto who have been regulars in the knock-out stages lost in the third qualifying round to Krasnodar. PSV Eindhoven lost to Basel in the second qualifying round. Scottish champions Celtic again failed to access the group stages, losing to CFR Cluj in the third qualifying round.

Only Red Star Belgrade manage to succeed all the way from the first qualifying round to the group stages (eight games). Ajax, the 2019 semi-finals, had to play four qualifying matches but made it through to the group stages once again.

The eight groups stages had few surprises, probably the main one is the failure of Ajax (semi-finalists last season), and Inter Milan to reach the last sixteen. At the end we saw four English clubs, four teams from Spain, three each from Italy and  Germany and two from France.

The rich Manchester City owners have dreamed the day they will win the Champions League. The nearest achieving was the semi-finals in the 15/16 season. The past two years they exit at quarter final stage with Liverpool and Tottenham.

Juve after dominating the last 8 seasons in Italy is ready to face a new champions league season. Juve have again been busy in the transfer market with signings such as De Ligt (the most talented player from previous champions league which scored against Juve) aimed at boosting their Champions League hopes. The cup is missing from more than 20 years (2006).

Liverpool, the current Champions League holder, an European Super Cup and a FIFA Club World Cup titles. With the mission to lead and win also the Premier League, it’s not a surprise that many believe the Liverpool will be the winner again. They struggled a bit in the group stages, they won the group but for example got only one point against Napoli. Not always with a great form in Champions League but with that quality squad we see them to reach a third final in a row and win another European title.

Real Madrid dreamed the winning of its fourth Champions League title in a row last season but it didn’t work out though due to a hugely disappointing Spanish League. Real Madrid lost in the last sixteen to Ajax, their worst performance in the Champions League since 2010. For a better performance this season, they signed Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and Ferland Mendy (around £300m spent). Despite that, they still finished second behind PSG in their group stage and faced a tough game against Manchester City.

Despite the Spain teams have dominated the Champions League in recent years, Barcelona has not been the one lifting the trophy. They won La Liga for the past 2 seasons but no Champions League trophy since 2015. One appearance in the final over the past eight seasons, that’s all! The arrival of Antoine Griezmann and Frankie De Jong made the Barcelona squad a strong contenders to win the Champions League.

Bayern Munich VS PSG

There are so many bets that you can place on the Champions League. There are of course many contenders and difficult to predict with many strong teams which can make it through the end. Tottenham with the Jose Mourigno era, or Juve with the new Maurizio Sarri style or what about the spanish Real Madrid & Barcelona or, again, the Liverpool and voulcanic Jurgen Klopp or one of his competitors in Premier League Chelsea, Manchester City, or maybe a German one between Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Munich…
